Pugh's latest trick celebrates the Erie Canal

    By Mary Ann Cook

TROMPE L'OEIL: Los Gatan John Pugh continues his winning ways in international competitions. He recently won a commission to paint a mural in Syracuse, N.Y., which celebrates the Erie Canal. The mural will overlook the freeway interchange, and even New York's governor got into the act: He picked Pugh's concept.

In the mural an old packet boat appears to be leaving the weigh lock building, suspended four stories above the ground. In office windows above the projecting boat are the governor in 1825 (DeWitt) and the canal engineer. This competition was a long, long process. Pugh submitted his proposal more than a year ago. It will appear on the Sen. John H. Hughes State Office Building.

Pugh says about his work, "The viewer may experience sequential discoveries, as my compositions are designed to unfold in narrative layers." My favorite Pugh rendering is in Winslow, Ariz. He won that in international competition, too. It shows an office building with a girl driving a truck, apparently inside the building.

The name of the piece is "Slowin' Down to Take a Look." Subhead: "There's a Girl, My Lord, in a Flatbed Ford."

TURNAROUND SCHOLARSHIPS: The Los Gatos Kiwanians are justly proud of their first go-round of Turnaround Scholarships. The club awarded scholarships to three Los Gatos High School seniors and two Saratoga High seniors, all of whom had managed to turn their lives--and grades--around after a dismal start in their high school careers.

From Los Gatos are Matthew Hoffman, Brie Ohlund and Dylan Vicha. Hoffman will attend University of Pacific, Ohlund will head for Chico State and Vicha will attend San Jose State University. The Saratogans honored are Lindsay Eschleman, who will start a college career at West Valley College and Bret Miller, who is bound for Fullerton State College.

Guidance counselors at both schools were credited, along with the students themselves, most of whom had failing grades before knuckling down for a dramatic change. The counselors are Teri Zappacosta of LGHS and Gail Wasserman of SHS.

It was an emotion-filled luncheon for Kiwanians, the students and their parents as the young people recounted their individual struggles. "The afternoon was a tribute to these students' strength, courage and successes," said Catherine Barrier, Kiwanis president.

Office Depot and California Federal Savings helped make the luncheon tribute possible.

BIRTHDAY: Nearly 100 people helped Adu Bagley celebrate her 70th at her Monte Sereno home with son and daughter-in-law Mark and Christie Batten doing the hosting. "Still a babe after all these years," says the invitation, with a picture of baby Bagley therein.

The request was for no gifts, but donations to Los Gatos Community Foundation for the Gazebo Fund or West Valley Federated Woman's Club were welcomed. Memories and anecdotes about the honoree were encouraged.

VANITY FAIR: Those 1989 grads of Los Gatos High School are popping up all over, in this, their 10th anniversary year. Spotted in the June issue of Vanity Fair is Jeff Tuttle, international male model, who appears on three pages worth of Nordica advertising.

At the library the pages are even tagged with the news that this is a Los Gatan, the librarian's permission having been obtained. The tagger was Elle Stern. Jeff's parents are Sue and Nicholas Tuttle.

TENNIS CHAMPS: A couple of Saratoga girls, Ashley, 14, and Allie, Lipton, 11, are No. 1 in the Norcal tennis standings in their age divisions. This may be the first and only time two youngsters from one family are listed in the No. 1 position.

"Ashley is quick, with exceptional foot speed, plays smart tennis, quickly adjusting her game according to what she's facing. Allie is extremely strong, dominates her opponents physically, is a tough competitor."

That's their father, Doug, appraising their playing styles. The Liptons will follow the national tournament circuit this summer, with Ashley destined to be nationally ranked by the end of the season.

BUTTER PADDLE PROCEEDS: The Butter Paddle raised $169,320, for the past fiscal year, a record for the auxiliary, whose beneficiary is Eastfield Ming Quong. The money was presented to EMQ, which helps children with emotional problems.

Officers of the auxiliary are Mary-Lynne Bernald of Saratoga, president; Cathy Lynn of Los Gatos, past president/parliamentarian; Lynne Seay, Los Gatos, vice- president; Marcia Tammel, Saratoga, second vice-president and manager of the Butter Paddle.

NEWCOMERS ALUMNAE: Newcomers Alumnae of Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Saratoga recently installed officers: Marie Low and Cathy Gillum, co-presidents; Phyllis Melberg, first vice president; Helen Maher and Lois O'Haren, second v p; J.P. Puette, third v p; Linda Schechner, secretary and Carole Hardy, treasurer.
