Recognition program honors local seniors for involvement
Longtime Los Gatan Dale Hill was named Senior of Distinction at a champagne reception at The Terraces on May 26. The competition to recognize older adults in Los Gatos and Monte Sereno for their contributions to the community is sponsored annually by The Terraces and the Los Gatos Weekly-Times.
Hill has been active since 1965 in the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno-Saratoga League of Women Voters and in the LWV at the state level; she serves on the Advisory Council of Live Oak Adult Day Services, where, since 1986, she has held the offices of president, secretary, nominating and bylaws chairwoman.
She has served on the Los Gatos Planning Commission, the Town Library Board--as chairwoman in 1997--and is active in Friends of the Library. She's also been active in the American Association of University Women and has served on the county grand jury and on the Santa Clara County 2020 Open Space Task Force.
In nominating Hill, a LWV colleague wrote, "Dale doesn't just 'collect' memberships on boards to receive personal recognition; she works hard on every one of them, often completing the tasks that are most difficult, time-consuming and avoided by other volunteers. She is a leader who understands how establishing processes is essential to achieving desired results."
Honorable mentions were presented to three other notable seniors--Rita Lynott, Doris Prince and Georgia Travis.
Lynott has been active for many years in Sacred Heart Community Center, which meets basic food and clothing needs for people in need, and in St. Mary's Parish and Sisters of the Holy Names Convent. For more than 25 years, Lynott has cooked for special occasions at the convent, and she has been making cookies and desserts for the dinner meal every Tuesday. She was a founder of the Strawberry Luncheon which supports the sisters in the convent's care center.
Doris Prince is a resident of The Terraces, where she is active as a volunteer for the health center and other programs. In 1997, the former educator established a scholarship for educational administration at San Jose State University.
She volunteers for the Discovery Shop, the information booth at the San Jose Airport, the Tech Museum, where she's a docent, at Flint Center and at the San Jose Rep where she is an usher.
Georgia Travis, who lives at the Meadows, has devoted much of her life to helping the poor. She has been active in AAUW's homeless committee and was the founder of the Georgia Travis Center for Homeless Women and Children in San Jose.
She continues to contribute financially to help the homeless and to be an advocate for services for the poor. She is an emeritus member of the Los Gatos Interfaith Outreach.
Mayor Jan Hutchins presented the Senior of Distinction award to Hill, and Dale Bryant, editor of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, made presentations to those who received honorable mention.
