New chancellor named for West Valley College district

Linda Graef Salter has been administrator on several campuses

    By Jason Baker

Trustees for the West Valley-Mission Community College District on June 10 made a long awaited announcement, naming Linda Graef Salter the new chancellor of the district. Trustees also named Christopher Cole O'Hearn as president of Mission College.

Since 1986, Salter has been president of Skyline College in San Bruno. She previously served as dean of student services at Grossmont College in El Cajon.

She replaces Lois A. Callahan, who currently serves as interim chancellor for the district. Callahan replaced Rose Tseng, who left WV-MCCD in 1998 for a job in Hawaii.

After receiving her B.A. in philosophy from Oberlin College, Salter earned a masters degree in mathematics from UC-Berkeley. She currently is a USC doctoral candidate in higher education. Her community affiliations include serving on the boards of trustees for Golden Gate University and the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation.

Christopher O'Hearn comes to Mission College from Southern California. He most recently served as vice president for instruction at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.

Additionally, trustees promoted Kirk Murray to interim vice chancellor of administrative services, replacing Les White who was recently named interim executive director of the United Way of Santa Clara County. Murray has worked as director of human resources for the district since 1995. Previously, he was vice president for human, financial and information resources at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He will oversee the police department, human resources, facilities, maintenance, finance and the budget. He holds a B.A. from Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y.

The chancellor and president were selected after a nationwide search and extensive interviews conducted by committees with district-wide representation.
