Angela Cono
Longtime Monte Sereno resident Angela Cono died May 18 at the age of 69.
Cono was born April 18, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Italian immigrant parents, the only daughter among three sons. After graduating from Cleveland schools, she enrolled in Western Reserve night school and served as an apprentice in the technical medical laboratory at Lutheran Hospital, where she became familiar with new techniques in electroencephalography.
She later moved to the West Coast and began working in this field under a doctor. In 1955, she married landscape designer and sociologist Joseph Cono and moved to Monte Sereno. Cono worked as a medical technician, assisted in opening the EEG clinic at San Jose's O'Connor Hospital and later became a medical librarian at Community Hospital of Los Gatos.
As a practical person, Cono translated social precepts into social action. For many years, she worked on the hotline of the Santa Clara Valley Crisis Center. She also returned to school to study foreign languages and later taught Italian and Spanish to children in Santa Clara County public schools. Her late daughter Sandra Cono shared her mother's interest in this field and became a language teacher at Los Gatos High School.
Cono was also very interested in music, especially the works of Verdi and Puccini. She encouraged the musical education and abilities of her son Randy, who would grow up to become a violinist, concert master with two opera orchestras, founder of two string quartets and director of the Old Town Music Conservatory in Atlanta, Ga.
Cono was a longtime member of the San Jose Opera Guild, was an active member of the Amici di Merola Program of the San Francisco Opera and was instrumental in bringing Merola performances to Villa Montalvo in Saratoga. Cono enjoyed preparing gourmet Italian meals and tending to the flourishing gardens at her home.
Survivors include husband Joseph of Monte Sereno; son and daughter-in-law Randy and Miriam Cono of Atlanta, Ga.; and three brothers in the Bay Area. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on June 26 at 11 a.m. at the Cono home, 15701 Oak Knoll Drive.
Donations may be made to the Angela and Sandra Cono Endowment Fund for the Amici di Merola, in care of the San Francisco Opera Center, 301 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco, 94102.
