Change of dumps is proposed
Switching landfills could save West Valley residents more than $800,000, according to a study released by the organization that negotiates trash pickup and disposal rates for Los Gatos and Monte Sereno.
West Valley Cities Solid Waste Management Program recommends dumping the Guadalupe Landfill and carrying trash to the Newby Island Landfill, where fees are lower.
This proposal surfaces at a time when the West Valley cities are embroiled in lawsuits, both with their trash pickup company, Green Valley Disposal, and the landfill. One issue of contention is the rate the landfill charges to empty trash trucks.
The Monte Sereno City Council was to discuss the rates June 18.
The Los Gatos Town Council is expected to discuss the matter at a July meeting.

Good Sam renamed
After buying the Good Samaritan Health System, the Columbia Healthcare Corporation rechristened the group and each of its member hospitals to reflect the new owner.
With the parent company's name tacked on, local hospitals will now be known as Columbia Good Samaritan Hospital and Columbia Los Gatos Surgical Center.
The system is now known as Columbia Bay Area Healthcare Network.
