Five Gatos football players on the North all-star squad

    By Dick Sparrer

It's summer, and time for baseball, swimming, picnics in the park... and football?

That's right. While football may be considered a fall sport in most areas, in the Santa Clara Valley there's football every summer for the very best of the recently graduated high school seniors.

And the same game, but with something of a new name, returns to the valley this summer when the North meets the South in the Silicon Valley Youth Classic Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Football Game.

The game is slated for July 26, 7:30 p.m., at Spartan Stadium. And just as it has in years past, the Almaden Valley Rotary Club sponsored event promises to be the "Best Game in Town."

Local stars Jared Allen, Mike Belsheim, Nick Cisowski, Justin Narragon and Ben Winkelman of Los Gatos will be on the field for the North team in the summer classic.

The complete roster of the North squad, to be coached by Matt Weinbrock of St. Lawrence Academy, includes: Jared Allen, Mike Belsheim, Nick Cisowski, Justin Narragon and Ben Winkelman of Los Gatos; Patrick Allison, Matt Lemos, Brian McClenahan and Ronald Nunn of St. Francis; Mark Baylon, Kayle Buchanan, Billy Hampton and Andy Heiser of Santa Clara; Kyle Kingsbury and John Lozano of Monta Vista; Chris Keith, Kevin May and David Toomey of Mitty; Rory McMilton, Mark Pierce, Spencer Scott and Braden Spencer-Albert of St. Lawrence; Matt Fratus and B.K. Robertson of Lynbrook; Joey Conley and Mike Runfola of Cupertino; Rex Finato and Justin Silverman of Gunn; Brandon Simmons and Lance Vee Jr. of Wilcox; Jeff Berger and Brian Egger of Del Mar; Andrew Bosworth of Saratoga; Jose Deanda Jr. of Mountain View; Mike Field of Los Altos; Brendan Floyd of Leigh; Andrew Heling of Prospect; Ben Holmes of Westmont; Tony Kiel of Homestead; Don Reighard of Palo Alto; Leo Saenz of Fremont; and Mike Serena of Milpitas.

The complete roster of the North squad, to be coached by Matt Kiesle of Piedmont Hills and Mark Kaanapu of Live Oak, includes: Ben D'Antonio and David Macchi of Willow Glen; Brian Davis, Travis Murdock and Mike Wiens of Pioneer; Danny Burde, Tony Cigliutti and Mike Henrikson of Santa Teresa; Mike Collins and Jake Mossawir of Bellarmine; Albert Garcia, Bo Kun Kim, Jose Mendoza and Chad Parker of Live Oak; Ben Marshall and Chris Smith of Lincoln; Nick Gardiner, Brandon Lartigue, Kellen Taylor and G.B.
