Laura Nachison will take a leave from commission
By Nathan R. Huff
Chairwoman Laura Nachison announced her resignation from the town's planning commission, effective June 30, in a June 7 letter to the town council, planning commission and staff. A day later, Nachison withdrew the letter.
At Councilman Joe Pirzynski's request, Nachison agreed to take a leave of absence while she begins a new diabetes medication that requires adherence to a strict routine.
"I asked her what she really wanted to do," Pirzynski said, "and what she really wanted was to stabilize her medical situation."
The council will decide whether or not to grant Nachison leave, and the acceptable length of absence. Nachison said she wasn't sure how long it would be, but estimated a six-month absence.
Normally a seven-member commission, the body would have dropped to five if Nachison had resigned. The town council has yet to appoint a replacement for Sandy Decker, who resigned earlier this year. Decker said she felt she could not adequately express opinions on the commission and wanted to run for town council.
Pirzynski said the town was at too critical a juncture to lose another planning commissioner. "She's a fantastic member of the planning commission," he said, "and these are crucial times where we need good thinking."
