The Meadows starts program featuring artist in residence

Pianist Roger Nelson comes to the Los Gatos Meadows on July 10 through 12, as the first-ever artist in residence at the senior retirement community at 110 Wood Road.

Nelson, the son of longtime Meadows residents Col. William and Frances Nelson, began studying piano at the age of 4, when he lived in Santa Cruz. By age 12, he was studying in Palo Alto with Adolph Baller, who at the time was a member of the Almo Trio with the late Yehudi Menuhin.

Nelson, who composed one piece of music every day during 1999, is a conductor, composer and performer. He teaches at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, and travels throughout the world. He will arrive at the Meadows following a month of performances in China.

On July 10, Nelson will demonstrate the "how" of songwriting. On July 11, he will compose requests and share the process. On July 12, he will perform a concert in the Meadows Lounge, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The concert is open to the public.
