Senior of Distinction honored at annual awards ceremony
Beverly Rouse was named this year's Senior of Distinction at an awards ceremony and champagne reception on May 31 at The Terraces, which co-sponsors the annual recognition with the Los Gatos Weekly-Times. The award is presented in May in honor of Older Americans Month.
Rouse, a longtime Los Gatos resident, has been active in local schools. She was a founder of the Village House, the volunteer-operated restaurant, which for 35 years raised funds for Eastfield Ming Quong. She and her late husband were instrumental in starting The Terraces. Rouse serves on The Terraces advisory board, and on the board of the American Baptist Homes of the West, which owns and operates The Terraces.
In addition to Rouse, six other local seniors were recognized with honorable mentions. They included Wes Smith, a retired IBM engineer who contributes locally and globally through his work with Habitat for Humanity and the Red Cross; and Adu Bagley, long active on the town's trails and bikeways committee and co-founder of the Los Gatos Community Foundation.
Johnny Smart is recognized this year by the Los Gatos Lions Club for perfect attendance for 50 years. He has been active in leadership roles in the service club and a variety of community causes, including the town library. Lucia Callis, former co-owner of Green's Pharmacy, has been active with Rotary Club's Inner Wheel, AAUW, the Los Gatos History Club and St. Mary's Church. Stanley and Harriette Froid have both been community volunteers and now, as residents of The Terraces, they've created the Notions and Needs Gift Shop and organized the while elephant sale, a popular annual event.
