    Senior Services

The town's loose network of services lacks a coordinator

At a time when senior centers are booming, the Los Gatos senior center has been shrinking. In fact, there's hardly a senior center at all. Los Gatos serves seniors through a loose patchwork of independent nonprofit organizations, each with its own board of directors and its own agenda. While the town's Community Services Department oversees the funding of senior programs as part of its duties, no one person on the town's payroll is responsible for an overall senior program. By parceling out funds to agencies instead of offering a town program for seniors, the town avoids the expense of salaries and benefits for those who would run a senior center. This also means the town has little say over its senior program. Although the town appears satisfied with its approach to senior services, the agencies themselves have been frustrated by the lack of a focal point for Los Gatos seniors, and for those elderly who are slipping between agency cracks.   More
