    Thomas, Burke homer in win

Derek Thomas and Dylan Burke weren't much interested in playing a close game when the Los Gatos Little League 11-year-old all-star team opened the District 12 tournament last weekend.

So they set out to do something about it.

Thomas and Burke each blasted two-run homers to key a nine-run rally in the second inning that started Los Gatos on the road to a 12-0 rout of Saratoga in first-round action.

Gatos led just 1-0 after an inning, but put the game away with the nine runs in the second.

Danny Sullivan started things innocently enough with a single to open the second. Thomas followed by ripping the first pitch he saw over the center field fence for a two-run homer.

David Pavicich reached on an error, and Burke quickly made it 5-0 Los Gatos with another two-run blast.

That was only the beginning. Matt Perrone and Marty Mullins each reached on errors, and Jake Schonig walked to load the bags. Justin Schafer walked to force home a run, and Rusty Wall singled in another.

Then Sullivan, up for his second time in the inning, cleared the bags with a three-run double to cap the nine-run rally.

Los Gatos added two more runs in the third. Perrone doubled, Mullins singled, and Chris Keesling singled to load the bags. Two runs scored when Wall reached on an error.

Thomas tossed two innings for Gatos, allowing just one hit, and Navneet Hakhu and Sullivan each following with an inning of hitless relief.

Los Gatos advances to the second round of the tournament June 29, 5:30 p.m., against Almaden at Los Gatos. The winner won't return to the diamond until July 9, and the losing team will be back in action on July 7 at Los Gatos' Baggerly Field.
