Craig Heimbichner leaves for new job at Placer High School
By Leigh Ann Maze
After five years with the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School district, Craig Heimbichner has accepted a job as principal at Placer High School in Auburn.
Heimbichner's last day with the LG-SJUHSD was June 27. He began his new duties as principal in Auburn on his birthday, July 5.
"It's close to where I am from and many of my friends and family are there, so I'm kind of returning to my roots," Heimbichner said.
Placer High is a 103-year-old school with about 1,800 students. Heimbichner said that Placer High, though larger, has some parallels to Los Gatos High School, such as the high amount of community involvement in the school, and that the many former students return to teach at their alma mater.
"I sense that [Placer High School's] philosophy is a good match for me and I will be able to provide the leadership they are looking for," Heimbichner said. "But I will certainly miss many people from the Los Gatos community and will take with me many fond memories."
Heimbichner began working for the LG-SJUHSD in 1995 when he was hired as assistant principal at LGHS.
In April 1999, word that Heimbichner, then in his fourth year as assistant principal, might be demoted to a classroom position ignited protests from students, faculty and some community members. Hundreds of students walked out of classrooms and a handful of parents picketed in front of the school.
On May 6, 1999, Heimbichner was reassigned by LG-SJUHSD superintendent Cynthia Ranii to the newly created position in the district office of assistant principal of school safety and alternative programs. Ranii said it was a lateral move, that allowed Heimbichner to retain the same salary and status, and to continue working in the area of discipline.
At the time of his reassignment Heimbichner told the Los Gatos Weekly-Times that he was looking around outside of the district.
As Heimbichner vacates his position with the LG-SJUHSD, Ranii said that Ann Haggerty, the district's educational services coordinator, will increase her hours to take on some of Heimbichner's alternative programs coordination duties. Heimbichner's school safety duties will be absorbed by various administrative staff, Ranii said.
