This African wildcat, a wild ancestor of the domestic cat, was lost in the bush in Namibia when Kristin Nowell and Tom Preisser's dog found him at the age of about six weeks. They raised him as a pet till he reached maturity when he reintroduced himself back into the wild in Africa.
Wild Cat Preservation
Los Gatos has become headquarters for an international wild cat conservation organization
|
Kristin Nowell is head of the nonprofit Cat Action Treasury (CAT), a Los Gatos-based organization which matches funding with wild cat projects all over the world. She is directly responsible for setting up conservation programs in Taiwan, Namibia, Cambodia and Mongolia, and for implementing U.S. policy that imposes sanctions on countries that ignore their own policies prohibiting the use of endangered species in traditional medicines. Nowell's work also includes co-authoring, with well-known conservationist Peter Jackson, the definitive book on wild cats, Wild Cats, status, survey and conservation action plan--some even call it the cat bible. In July, Nowell will be featured on CNN for the project CAT coordinated on the rare Andean mountain cat.
