Author, bookstore team up for charity
Homeless programs will benefit
Los Gatos resident and author Ira Harris Spector is participating in Borders Books' upcoming Benefit Days event Aug. 6, 7 and 8 at its location in Old Town on University Avenue.
During the three-day event, proceeds from the sales of 250 donated autographed copies of Spector's latest book, Last Chance, will support the Emergency Housing Consortium and St. Luke's Food Pantry. Borders is also donating 15 percent of the prices of all items purchased in the bookstore or cafe to these two causes.
Last Chance, a novel described as "fact-based fiction," tells the story of a Silicon Valley entrepreneur's high-tech plan to end homelessness in the United States. Spector himself will be at the bookstore all day on Aug. 7 to meet readers and discuss his book. He will also give a presentation at 7 p.m.
The Emergency Housing Consortium is Silicon Valley's largest provider of shelters and services for homeless people and serves more than 10,000 men, women and children through a network of program locations throughout Santa Clara County.
St. Luke's Food Pantry, which operates out of Los Gatos' St. Luke's Episcopal Church on University Avenue, provides groceries to needy local families and individuals. The program depends on local contributions as well as funding by the Salvation Army.
