Swim Championships
All eyes were focused on the swimming competition last week when the Olympic Games opened in Atlanta.
But Santa Clara will be the center of swimming activity for future Olympians later this week when the U.S. Swimming/Speedo Junior Championship West is held Aug. 1-5 at the International Swim Center.
Jeremy Kane and Danielle Lux of Los Gatos will be among the more than 1,000 athletes competing in the meet that features the top young swimmers, ages 14-17, from west of the Mississippi.
"Every one of those swimmers out there has a dream to one day compete in the Olympics," meet director John Lux said.

McNamara ices berth
Matt McNamara of Monte Sereno has iced a berth on the Pacific Coast All-Star Ice Hockey team that was to travel to Boston for a six-game tournament late this month.
McNamara, a 14-year-old defenseman, was one of 88 players invited to try out for the team and one of only 21 selected. He is one of just two players from Northern California on the squad.
