Lampe dives for two golds
By Dick Sparrer
Summer is the perfect time to take a refreshing dive into the cool waters of the swimming pool.
And three Los Gatos divers did just that during a hot July weekend in Washington State. But they weren't just trying to cool off, and they weren't diving in to take a swim.
The three were competing in the Region 10 Junior Olympic Diving Championships in Federal Way, Wash., and they each came through with impressive performances.
Katie Lampe topped the list of Gatos placers by winning a pair of gold medals and a silver in the girls 13-and-under age group. Lampe, who will enter the eighth grade at Fisher Middle School in the fall, was first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events, and she placed second in platform diving.
Sara Clark, who will be a sophomore at Los Gatos High, and Nathan Sheffer, who will be a junior at Gatos, also placed in the rugged Junior Olympic field.
Clark finished seventh on the 1-meter board and eighth on the 3-meter board in the girls 14-15 age group, and Sheffer was ninth on the 3-meter board and 11th on the 1-meter board in the boys 14-15 class.
The three divers, who all compete for the Santa Clara Divers at the Santa Clara International Swim Center, qualified for the 1999 Zone E Junior Olympic Diving Championships with the efforts.
