    The Prowler

Books, birds and computers--what do they have in common? Not a whole lot, except that the Prowler is writing about them all in the same column!

There's plenty of free fun for all ages at Borders Books, Music & Cafe this month. On Aug. 18 at 8 p.m., prolific author Rudy Rucker will be visiting with the public and reading from his new books, Seek! and Saucer Wisdom. For kids, there's the Borders Explorer Camp, which offers storytimes, art projects, music and games on Mondays from 2:30 to 5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The program began on Aug. 9 and runs through Aug. 25. There's no charge to attend, but youngsters do need to sign up. Borders is in the ever-evolving Old Town at 50 University Ave. For more info, call 395-6622.

Adventuresome kids who've participated in any or all of this year's R.T. Chickadee's Backyard Ranger's Club through the Wild Bird Center won't want to miss the final meeting on Aug. 17--a morning spent making T-shirts to commemorate the summer club's activities. Young rangers should bring their own shirts; paint and stencils will be provided. Fee is $6 per child and space is limited; call 358-9453 to reserve a spot.

And for aspiring computer geeks who want to get plugged in but don't know where to start, the Los Gatos- Saratoga Department of Community Education and Recreation offers a Women's Beginning Internet class on Aug. 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All the basics are covered, including joining an online service provider, sending email, learning technical jargon and using the World Wide Web for research as well as fun and games. To sign up, call 354-8700, ext. 221.
