    The Prowler

Although cats and dogs--no matter what lengths our fur grows to--are not allowed in hair salons, the Prowler would like to put in a good word for local salon and spa Brandau Brandau anyway. On Aug. 22, the 540 N. Santa Cruz Ave facility will hold a Haircut-A-Thon to raise money for the Capernaum Project, a local nonprofit that enriches the lives of disabled children and teenagers through various programs.

All haircuts are $15, and all proceeds go to Capernaum. More funds will be raised from a bake sale and from raffle prizes donated by the salon's clients. This is the second such fundraiser Brandau Brandau has thrown; the first benefited breast cancer research. The one catch to the 'Thon is that no shampoos or blowdrys will be available, due to time constraints.

Congregation Shir Hadash in Los Gatos has also caught the philanthropic spirit with its school supplies drive. Because some kids start school each fall without such staples as pencils, paper, binders, books and calculators, the congregation has developed this communitywide drive. Last year, Shir Hadash got 40 children and teenagers living in San Jose shelters off to a great start with new supplies. Donations can be dropped off at 16555 Shannon Road. For more info, call 358-1751.

As a side note, the Prowler hears Los Gatos artist Dolly Johnson will have a booth at the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts, held Aug. 21-22. Johnson works in watercolor, acrylic airbrush, colored pencil and soft pastel to color her trademark kites and smaller "kitelets." Palo Alto's University Avenue is the venue for this creative fest, which features artisans from around the country.
