School district already busy doing homework

As the school year begins, Los Gatos High School is well on its way to expanding and renovating its aging facilities. Thanks to passage of a $79 million school bond in June 1998 for the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District, long needed upgrades and repairs are being made.

In the Los Gatos Union School District, the picture's not so rosy. Schools in the district are also in desperate need of repair, renovation and expansion.

But with voter approval of the high school bond, and residents already paying a parcel tax for the LGUSD, funding the needed improvements may be a hard sell.

The district's approach leading up to a likely bond election has been to invite the community over a period of months to participate in forums aimed at gathering information as well as educating residents to the district's needs.

The elementary school district is one of the major reasons why people buy a home in Los Gatos, and many young families are stretched beyond their means to raise their children in a community where the schools have such a good reputation.

The district is in the process of building a strong case for placing a bond election on the ballot. Now the trick will be to convince the community that even the best teachers and the best intentions can't keep old buildings from wearing out over the years.

    Call it a bloomfest

They're at it again. The same crowd that convinced the town to purchase a sidewalk cleaner and also established a quarterly award for well-landscaped businesses now has the notion that during those dreary days that precede spring, it would be just dandy if daffodils and hyacinths started popping up all over town.

If this isn't the bloomingest idea!

Just like members of a gang who want to leave their signature all over the place, these members of the Town of Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce beautification committee are on a mission to make Los Gatos the cleanest, freshest, prettiest little community for miles around.

And come spring, just possibly the most fragrant.

In addition to the beautification committee, other segments of the community are geared up to make the Bloom-A-Thon a reality by participating in a day of bulb planting Sept. 17. They include members of Congregation Shir Hadash, the town parks and public works department, Club Live and employees at the Los Gatos sites of the Santa Clara County Fire Dept.

Volunteers are welcome to bring gloves and trowels and join in. The fun begins in the parking lot at Congregation Shir Hadash, 16555 Shannon Road.

What better way for a community to share its hope for the future than by gathering at the beginning of autumn to make an investment bound to bring a bright reward as we enter spring, the season of renewal and hope?
