Caltrans opens 17's Lexington overpass
Highway 17 mountain commuters can expect smoother-flowing traffic and a safer drive in the Lexington reservoir area, now that traffic on the Lexington overpass flows both directions.
Caltrans opened the overpass to southbound traffic Aug. 29. Since July 18, the bridge had been open in one direction to let drivers merge safely into the highway's northbound lanes.
Caltrans built the overpass and a system of frontage roads to eliminate the intersections at Black Road, Montevina Road and Bear Creek Road, where drivers had to enter the highway by turning left across several lanes of traffic.
The overpass is named for Gillian Cichowski, who was killed on the highway in 1992 when a car turned in front of her from Old Santa Cruz Highway.
Margaret Green of Sunnyvale died in a similar accident at Bear Creek Road during overpass construction.

Parks lease reservoirs for 20 more years
The 10 reservoirs and numerous creeks that supply water to Santa Clara Valley residents will continue to offer fishing, boating and other recreation for at least 20 more years.
The county Parks and Recreation Department approved a lease that the county Board of Supervisors is expected to accept Sept. 10.
The parks department has leased reservoirs since 1958 and can allow any activities there that don't jeopardize the supply of water.
