The girls' teams from the Courtside Tennis Club commanded most of the attention heading into the Junior Team Tennis state championships.
And why not? Both teams were returning for a second straight state appearance, and one was a defending state champion.
But Courtside was sending three teams, not just two, to the state championships Aug. 24-25 at UCLA. And it was the third team, the Boys' 12 squad, that brought home the Gar Glenney Cup.
The Courtside boys knocked off Cabrillo 6-3 in the championship match to claim the state championship.
Eric Huang contributed to two of the six victories to lead Courtside to the title. Huang posted a tight 2-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 5 singles, then came back to team with Garrett Wyatt for a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Adam Fauvre nailed a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles and A.J. Kerin won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Daniel Soloman chipped in with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.
Bastion Bartels dropped a tough 6-1, 7-5 nod at No. 1 singles, but he battled back to team with Ashvin Soin to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles for Courtside.
Fauvre and Kerin lost 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles and Garrett Wyatt fell 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to round out the competition.
The Boys' 12 squad was one of three Courtside teams to win Northern California titles to qualify for the state finals. The Girls' 15 and Girls' 18 teams also earned state berths by winning NorCal titles.
But the Girls' 15s, defending state champions, lost a 5-4 heartbreaker in the finals to the Upland Tennis Club.
Angela Chua posted a 6-0, 7-6 win at No. 5 singles and Amanda Wise won 7-6, 2-0 (retired) at No. 6 singles to account for Courtside's only singles wins in the match.
Wise and Crystal Carrera won by default at No. 3 doubles and Anna Hehegenberger and Jenny Mispagel won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Chua and Camille Behnke lost a tight 6-3, 7-5 nod at No. 1 doubles and Behnke fell 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
Hehegenberger dropped a tough 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 2 singles. Mispagel lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Natalie Ackerman fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4.
Maren Lasner won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and teamed with Stephanie Leupp for a 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles, but the Courtside Girls' 18 squad lost 6-3 to the Oxnard Tennis Club.
Tracy Moore nailed a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 5 singles, but that was the only other victory Courtside could manage in the match.
Moore and Malea Doore lost 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles and Tina Cseuz and Leah Thomas fell 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Cseuz dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles and Doore lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Thomas fell 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Leupp lost 6-2, 7-6 at No. 6 singles.
