    Housing, smart growth summit

    State Treasurer Phil Angelides will be the special guest at state Sen. Byron Sher's Housing and Smart Growth Summit on Sept. 15, at the Santa Clara Valley Water District headquarters.

    The discussion will include legislative updates on housing and smart growth issues and smart investments for the community.

    Voting systems at LWV meeting

    The annual fall kick off meeting for the League of Women Voters will feature past LWV president Paula Lee, who will speak on "Election systems Throughout the World."

    The discussion will focus on comparing different voting systems and how they affect representation, informed voter participation, stable and effective government, and the prevention of fraud and political manipulation.

    The meeting will begin on Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m., at the Saratoga Library on the corner of Saratoga and Fruitvale avenues. Call 408.867.VOTE or log on to www.lwv-lg-s-ms.org.

    Town workers receive awards

    Employees who have served Los Gatos for 15, 20 and 25 years will be recognized by the town council on Sept. 5.

    Twenty-five-year commendations go to Fred Cross, Ralph Orozco and Jim Schoenborn. Twenty-year awards go to Bruce Baker, Tom Jarvis, Steve Moore and Steve Regan, and 15-year recognition will be awarded to Timothy Boyer, William Breechen, Kevin Gray, Bud Lortz, Frank Salcido, Stephen Smith and Mark Wormley.
