Cougars, Panthers nail Pop Warner wins

The Cougars and Panthers each started the year off right with victories in the first week of play for clubs in the Los Gatos Pop Warner Football organization.

Kevin McCarty, Stefan Fowler ran for two touchdowns and Kevin McCarty scored once to lead the Cougars to a 20-6 win over the Bayside Broncos in junior midget division play.

A 9-yard run by Cameron Compton set up McCarty's 4-yard TD run in the first quarter to help the Cougars jump out to a 6-0 lead.

Fowler took the ball to the 1-yard-line with a 14-yard run, then followed a block by Brennan Barker to score a fourth-quarter touchdown to make it 12-0.

Fowler intercepted a pass late in the game and ran it 15 yards for a score. Scudellari kicked the two-pointer, and the Cougars won 20-6.

Scudellari was the leading tackler in the win, and Justin Foard forced a fumble that Marty Mullins recovered. Justin O'Connor ran a fake punt 16 yards for a first down on another key play in the game, and Jefrey West was a top receiver in the win.

Jake Schonig had two 25-yard touchdown runs and ran in for an extra point to lead the Panthers to a 13-7 pee wee division win over Bayside.

Nick Kalpin was the top tackler in the win and he an Kellan Barker were leading blockers.

Quarterback Nick Della Rocchetta completed a big 15-yard pass to Kelly Peterson to set up Schonig's first TD.

Schonig recovered two fumbles and Mitch Benedetti grabbed one, and Barker picked off a pass.

The Los Gatos Wildcats lost a 24-0 midget division decision to Bayside. Chris Van Amburg was the top ball carrier for the Wildcats and Brandon Vedder led the club in tackles.
