More of the same in frosh-soph division
By Dick Sparrer
It should be the same old story this fall for the frosh-soph football teams in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
At least, Los Gatos head coach Scott Downs hopes so.
For the better part of the decade, the Los Gatos and Wilcox football teams have battled it out for the frosh-soph crown in the division. And Downs figures the pattern will be the same in 1999.
Wilcox and Los Gatos tied for the championship in 1993, and ever since that year the Chargers and Cats have figured among the top two finishers in the division.
Wilcox has won every championship since '93, except 1997 when Fremont rose up to take the crown. Gatos and Wilcox tied for second that year.
Downs hopes the tradition continues this fall, but that his Cats come out on top. And he has a crop of eight talented sophomore returners who will try to make that hope a reality.
Sophomore nose guard Ken Heimer tops the pack of the returners for Los Gatos.
"He's the best nose guard in the league," said Downs of Heimer.
Along with Heimer, top sophs include Charlie Clark (running back, cornerback), Chris McMorrow (split end, strong safety), Peter Kiszka (corner, flanker), Matt Cooke (free safety, split end), Nick Crafford (offensive and defensive tackle), Evan McDonald (guard, linebacker) and Steve Sweeney (quarterback).
Incoming freshmen expected to play a key role for the Wildcats are Travis Howell (guard, linebacker), Alex Rollin (quarterback), Derek Tam (flanker, corner), Brian Miguel (running back, corner), Cameron Fee (free safety, split end) and Eric Brown (linebacker, fullback).
The young Cats open the '99 season on Sept. 11, 10:30 a.m., at Leland.
