County plans purge of active voter rolls

The Santa Clara County registrar of voters will soon be purging up to 44,000 names from its list of active voters.

Residency confirmation cards are being mailed to voters registered in the county who haven't cast a ballot in the last four years. Those whose cards do not come back to the registrar will have their names taken off the list of active voters, which means that they will not receive sample ballots or election information.

Voters who are removed from the active list can contact the registrar of voters to be reinstated anytime, up to and including Election Day.

    Call 299-8386.

    Recycling program for businesses

There's a new mixed-paper recycling program for Los Gatos businesses.

Green Valley Disposal will provide a 96-gallon wheeled cart for almost any kind of paper, whether it's junk mail, old phone books, colored paper, whatever.

    Call 354-2100.

    Caltrans changes one-way controls

Caltrans announced last week that it would be ditching the flaggers on Old Santa Cruz Highway at Bear Creek Road in favor of installing stoplights on the one-way stretch of road.

One-way traffic controls are in effect on a quarter-mile stretch of the highway as construction crews rebuild a section of roadway that slid into the reservoir during heavy rains in late 1997.

Caltrans says it made the move because the stoplights are safer, and because they can operate 24 hours a day. The flag teams directing traffic were only there from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the road was closed at night.
