The Prowler
Being a wild cat in a town named for its wildcats, the Prowler has an affinity for events dealing with wildlife or other aspects of the great outdoors.
Among this cat's favorite animals are butterflies--not to catch, but to admire because their transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis to beautiful flyer is so miraculous. Los Gatos' own Magical Beginnings Butterfly Farms offers this miracle in raise-your-own butterfly kits, which contain caterpillars, a leaf food source, instructions and information about the insects' life cycle.
Within about a week or so of chrysalis formation, the monarchs emerge, ready to fly to the California coastal areas where they "overwinter" until spring. Then they mate and lay eggs. Kits may be reserved through Sept. 20 at the Wild Bird Center in King's Court Shopping Center. Kits arrive between Sept. 23 and 26. For more info, call 358-9453.
Another wild event is coming up, sponsored by the nonprofit Youth Science Institute. Ron's Wildlife Run, set for Sept. 19 at 8:30 a.m. in Vasona Lake County Park, comprises a 10k run, a 5k run/walk and a special kids' race. This annual fundraiser supports the YSI's science education programs for children of all ages. To reserve a spot, call 356-4945.
There's nothing wild about the Sisters of the Holy Names convent in the Los Gatos hills, but their annual benefit dinner on Sept. 17 does include dessert and entertainment in the convent's pretty garden. Titled "Swing into 2000" (guess what music might be played!), the event benefits the elderly sisters and their volunteer ministry programs. Call 395-2868 for reservations, which are required by Sept. 10.
