    Sports Briefs

    Youth basketball

The Los Gatos National Junior Basketball League will hold sign-ups for the coming season on Sept. 14, 7-9 p.m., in the cafeteria at Van Meter Elementary School on Los Gatos Boulevard.

Players in the third-eighth grades who live in the Los Gatos and Leigh high school districts are eligible. Space is limited, and players are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Players must provide a copy of their birth certificate at the registration.

The league provides players the chance to play at a competitive level throughout the South Bay Area. For more information, call 536-0978.

    Los Gatos Fall Ball

Los Gatos Little League will be holding signups for its Fall Ball program over the next few weeks.

Fall Ball is for competitive level players, and is part of Little League Baseball's training and development program. It offers players an informal setting of one game each Sunday during the off season.

Fall Ball is offered to returning major division players, as well as those who strive to compete at the major division level in 2000. There will be two divisions, one for players who will be 11 or 12 next season and the other for players who will be 9 or 10.

Sign-up forms are being mailed this week to all players who participated in the major division program last season, as well as to players who participated on last year's 8-year-old and 9-year-old tournament teams.

Others interested in participating should call Randy Frey at 356-1424 and request a registration form. Cost of play is $35, which includes a T-shirt and an 11-week season. Play will begin on Sunday, Sept. 12.

    Labor Day basketball

The Labor Day Invitational, a basketball tournament for boys and girls in grades 6-8 and high school junior varsity players, will be held Sept. 10-12 at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills.

Age divisions include grade 6 (12-and-under), grade 7 (13-and-under), grade 8 (14-and-under) and junior varsity, and the tournament is open to school, club and traveling teams.

The cost is $250 per team and there is a three-game guarantee.

For more information, e-mail the Basketball Academy at jeff@jblev64198@aol.com or call Jeffrey Blevins at 281-2421.
