YSI holds the 16th annual Ron's Wildlife Run benefit
Vasona is setting for the annual fundraising event
The Youth Science Institute, a local nonprofit educational organization, has planned its 16th annual Ron's Wildlife Run for Sept. 19 at Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos. The run consists of a 10K run through Vasona and various parts of Los Gatos, a 5K run and walk along a shorter course, and a 2K race in four age categories for children 12 and younger. The 2K race starts at 8:20 a.m.; the 5K and 10K races begin at 8:30 a.m.
Along with plaques and medals, participants can also win several prizes, including a Cabo San Lucas trip, a YSI whale-watching trip and bicycles.
Ron's Wildlife Run commemorates the late Ron Becker, a running enthusiast and former YSI vice president. He created the 10K race in 1983 as a fundraiser for the organization and as an opportunity to enjoy another race himself. After his 1988 death, the race was named after him.
Proceeds from the event benefit the YSI's many science classes, workshops and outings for children and, in some cases, their parents as well. The YSI runs interpretive nature centers in three parks in Santa Clara County: Vasona in Los Gatos, Sanborn-Skyline in Saratoga and Alum Rock in San Jose. These, coupled with school presentations and other activities, bring science to life for more than 50,000 children and families each year.
The first 800 registrants get free T-shirts. Registration is available by mail or on race day, beginning at 7 a.m. For more information, call 356-4945.
