Fire truck back in service
An old friend is back at Oak Meadow Park, and youngsters wasted no time scrambling aboard the restored fire truck. The 1927 American LaFrance truck has been a playground fixture for decades, but was almost removed from the park because of safety concerns in October 1999. Instead, the town council pledged to save the truck by renovating and restoring it. When the estimate came in at $20,000, the town decided to go a cheaper route--have convicts do the work. The truck was transported to Elmwood Correctional Facility in February, where mechanically skilled inmates fixed up the old truck at no cost to the town.
