Skate park goes to town council

The parks commission's skate park subcommittee will present its recommendations to the town council on Sept. 18, after completing more than six months researching the feasibility of a skateboard park in Los Gatos.

The committee was formed by local students, parents, parks commissioners and town staff, and has been evaluating location, size and design issues. The committee also attended a skateboard park symposium in Alameda on May 10.

The committee has narrowed down locations to two possibilities based on safety, supervision and neighborhood concerns. Student volunteers will canvass the two areas with questionnaires before the Sept. 18 meeting. If the council is in favor of moving forward, the next step would be to hire a design consultant.

    Improvements to Highway 17

A number of Highway 17 transportation projects will begin in October, including several that should improve traffic flow in Los Gatos and neighboring cities.

Local projects include: braided ramps on southbound Highway 17 to Lark Avenue and southbound Highway 85 to southbound 17; an auxiliary lane on northbound 17 between 85 and Camden Avenue; an auxiliary lane on northbound 17 between Camden and Hamilton avenues; an additional lane in both directions of 17 from Highway 9 to 85; and a northbound 17 connector to northbound 85.

Funded by 1996 Measure A and B funds, and coordinated by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, the nine projects will cost a total of $42.8 million.
