St. Luke's begins its second season of Evensong concerts
For the beginning of its second season of evensong services and concerts, St. Luke's Episcopal Church offers a program of music for soprano, trumpet and organ on Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. at the church, 20 University Ave., next to Old Town.
Evensong is a custom of the Episcopal church dating back to 17th-century England and combines the traditional service of evening prayer, parts of which are sung by the priest and choir, with a postlude of special quality. This month's postlude features soprano Michelle Wardrip, trumpeter William Harvey and St. Luke's organist and choirmaster Richard Coulter. The program, which lasts about an hour, include works by Baroque composers J.S. Bach, Purcell and Vivaldi as well as contemporary pieces.
Wardrip, a resident of Oregon, has performed with several theatrical and opera groups and is a music teacher. She also serves as soloist and section leader for St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem. Harvey, a Berkeley native, is the principal trumpet of Opera San Jose and the Western Opera Theater and is a member of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra. He has also played in many recitals on the East and West coasts.
The service and concert are free, although there will be a freewill offering accepted. Everyone is welcome. Through May, St. Luke's will host an evensong program on the first Sunday of each month. Among the upcoming performers are organists, an organ-piano duo, a handbell quartet and a harpist. For more information, call the church music office at 408.354.2195.
