Four-of-a-kind helps Gatos water polo team to victory
By Dick Sparrer
A royal flush may beat four-of-a-kind in a hand of poker.
But beating four-of-a-kind wasn't in the cards for the Mountain View water polo team last week against Los Gatos.
Because the Wildcats put up matching fours in each of the four quarters last week to roll to a 16-8 victory over the Spartans in the season opener in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Brett Bannan punched in five goals to lead the Wildcats to the lopsided victory over the Spartans. Philip Roan and Bobby Crowder tossed in three goals apiece in the win.
Los Gatos scored four goals in the first period to take a 4-1 lead at the first buzzer, then matched Mountain View's four goals in the second period to lead 8-5 at the half.
Gatos outscored Mountain View 4-1 in the third and 4-2 in the fourth to pull away to the win.
The Wildcats are now 4-1 for the year and 1-0 in the young De Anza Division season.
The Gatos girls, meanwhile, were stuck with a 10-3 loss to Leland in their league opener.
But the Cats battled back to split a pair of games in tournament play this past weekend. Gatos dropped a tough 8-6 decision to Menlo-Atherton, but fought back to beat Harbor 6-5.
Emily Jeffers tossed in three goals to lead the Cats to the thrilling win over Harbor. She had scored five goals in the loss to M-A.
Reyes scores
Anita Reyes knocked in three goals and added three assists to help the Los Gatos girls field hockey team roll to a 7-0 win over Del Mar last week. It was the second win of the young season for the Wildcats.
Heather Kottmeier added a goal and three assists, Emily Scott and Cortney Kelly each popped a goal and dished an assist, Rachel Lichte scored a goal and Kristin Fahrenholz had two assists for the Cats in the victory.
Rinehard a killer
Lauren Rinehard pounded down 13 kills, but the Los Gatos girls volleyball team lost a tough 15-10, 15-8, 14-16, 15-11 decision to powerful St. Francis last week.
Gatos, 0-2 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, has opened the week by dropping a 15-8, 16-14, 15-7 decision to Los Altos.
Golfers drop two
The Los Gatos girls golf team dropped two decisions to St. Francis last week in Peninsula Athletic League play.
The Wildcats lost 116-130 to the Lancers at the Deep Cliff Golf Course. Katie Smith fired a 10 over par 40 and Alison Santana was close behind with a 42 for the Wildcats.
Smith had shot a 48 and Santana a 58 earlier in the week in a 136-165 loss to the Lancers.
Los Gatos is now 1-3 for the year.
Cats edge Falcons
Cristi Green and Alicia Hull nailed back-to-back wins at No. 1 and 2 singles to lead the Los Gatos girls tennis team to a thrilling 4-3 win over Saratoga last week in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.
Green pulled out a tough 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Amanda Wise of Saratoga at No. 1 singles and Hull won 6-3, 6-2 against Angela Yeh at No. 2 singles.
Gianna Cardinale rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles and Katrina Lebedeva and Stacey Hibbard won 7-6, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
The victory evened the Wildcats' league record at 2-2. Gatos is now 3-2 for the year.
