League plans recreation and enrichment forum

Ever wonder what your government has done for you lately?

A panel of three education and recreation officials will explain how their organizations serve Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Saratoga on Oct. 10.

The speakers are: Phil Pabich, assistant dean for the West Valley-Mission Community College District; Bob Best, director of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Community Education and Recreation Department; and Joan Pisani, director of the Saratoga Recreation Department.

Anyone interested is encouraged to attend and ask questions. For more information call Marlene Duffin at 867-1410.

Hikers invited to help preserve open space

Bay Area residents can take a hike, as far as the Greenbelt Alliance is concerned.

If they do it Oct. 12 at one of 11 designated trails, it will help the alliance raise funds for open-space protection.

Peak Experience, billed as the region's largest one-day hiking event, requires a minimum contribution of $20. For that, benefactors can join a hike with an experienced naturalist. And if they raise additional funds, they can win prizes, such as a camping trip, a bike or outdoor adventure books.

One of the official hikes will take place not far from Los Gatos on Black Mountain, in the Montebello Ridge Preserve. The trail climbs 1,800 feet in altitude over its 10.5-mile course. To sign up, call (800) 543-GREEN.
