Stratton drills 13 goals in two games

By Dick Sparrer

Rachel Stratton tossed in 13 goals in two games last week, but the Los Gatos girls' water polo team could manage just a split in battles with Presentation and Homestead.

Luckily for the Wildcats, the win came at the most important time.

Los Gatos pounded Homestead 19-13 in Santa Clara Valley League play. The Cats lost 15-9 to Presentation earlier in the week, but that loss came in a nonleague game.

Stratton bombed the Mustangs for eight goals, and Amanda Harrington added six goals to lead the Cats to the win over Homestead. Joy Patterson popped two goals and Lisa Cristol, Lynsie Tanguay and Katie Penkoff hit one each for the winners.

Los Gatos, 2-1 in league play and 9-3 for the year, had opened the week dropping the 15-9 nod to the Panthers.

Stratton led the Cats with five goals and Harrington and Cristol had two each, but that was all the scoring Gatos could manage in the game.

The Cats matched Presentation's three goals in the first period, but they were blanked 3-0 in the second and outscored 4-2 in the third and 5-4 in the fourth in the loss.

The Los Gatos boys, meanwhile, drilled Mountain View 17-7 in their league opener last week.

The Wildcats held just a slim 2-0 lead after a period, but led 7-2 at the half. The Cats then pounded the Spartans 10-1 in the third to take a commanding 17-3 lead into the final period.

Peter Filov poured in seven goals and Chris Park tossed in four to lead the Wildcats to the easy win. James Rego, Chris Herr and Marc Cavagnolo supported with two goals each for the Cats.
