Ten second-half goals sparked the Los Gatos boys water polo team to an exciting 15-12 win over Monta Vista in action last week in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Mark Walleen pumped in seven goals to lead the Wildcats to the victory. Bobby Crowder tossed in three goals in the win and Richie Crowder added two.

Brett Bertocci, Aaron Davis and Mike Dixon also scored goals in the win that helped Gatos improve to 2-1 in division play and to 9-6 for the year.

The Wildcats had opened league play with a lopsided 19-7 win over Cupertino. Walleen was the Gatos scoring leader with eight goals and R. Crowder and Dixon pitched in four apiece. B. Crowder added a pair of goals and Max Morse hit one.

Walleen buried five goals in a tough 12-9 loss to Palo Alto in other league action.

In girls water polo play, Catherine Eastman and Becca Norman were each named to the all-tournament team after leading the Los Gatos girls water polo team to a 2-2 record in the Willow Glen Scramble.

Norman tossed in five goals and Eastman added five to drive the Wildcats to a 13-10 win over Mt. Pleasant.

A game earlier, goals by Eastman, Laura Davis and Kristen Gonzales were not enough in a 15-3 loss to Pioneer.

Eastman and Norman had pitched in three goals apiece a week earlier in a 9-0 win over Lincoln. Gonzales added two goals and Becca Stein had one.

Eastman scored twice and Norman and Gonzales added a goal each, but Gatos lost 6-4 to Harbor.

Los Gatos had won a couple of games in the Los Altos Invitational earlier in the year.

Eastman had four goals and Gonzales, Stein and Monica Young had two each in a 13-1 win over Carmel. Margaux Staebler, Norman and Heather McMurray also had goals in the win.

Kacey Ballard and Kelly Deitrich popped two goals each and Eastman, Norman and Stein had one each in a 7-5 win over Independence.

The Wildcats opened league play with back-to-back losses, falling 13-2 to Homestead and 12-5 to Monta Vista to open the El Camino Division season.

Eastman and Rachael Jeffers each scored in the loss to the Mustangs, and Eastman and Norman had two goals apiece in the loss to the Matadors.

    Field hockey

A week that started out so well finished on a disappointing note for the Los Gatos field hockey team.

The Wildcats opened the week with a 5-0 win over Homestead, but lost 3-1 to St. Francis just a few days later.

Rachel Lichte knocked in two goals and Anita Reyes, Emily Scott and Stacey Cochran added one each in the win over the Mustangs.

Reyes scored the lone goal for the Cats in the 3-1 loss to the Lancers that left Gatos 5-1 for the year.

    Volleyball

Los Gatos ran its record to 3-0 in the De Anza Division with a 13-15, 15-13, 15-2, 15-12 win over Palo Alto in girls volleyball play last week.

The Wildcats, 11-4 for the year, had beaten Los Altos 15-10, 15-4, 15-12 and Monta Vista 15-4, 15-5, 11-15, 15-5 to open the league season.
