LGEEF plans ahead of time for annual Phone-A-Thon
It's never too early to think about fundraising, and the Los Gatos Elementary Educational Foundation is the first to agree. This week, the nonprofit organization is sending out information on its annual Phone-A-Thon to the parents of all children in the Los Gatos Union School District's elementary schools: Blossom Hill, Van Meter, Daves Avenue and Lexington; and its one middle school, R.J. Fisher.
In spite of its name, however, the idea behind the Phone-A-Thon is to avoid phone calls.
Once again, the emphasis this year is not on phoning parents and asking for donations, but instead on securing contributions in advance of the Nov. 5 fundraiser. That way, fewer volunteers will have to make fewer calls, and fewer families will have their Sunday afternoons interrupted by ringing telephones.
This year's goal is $131,000. These funds support programs that both the district and the parent community believe are the most important to maintain educational excellence, enrich school curricula and fund innovative education programs. This year, parent contributions to the LGEEF will help support Early Literacy, TRIAD student counseling services, Fisher's Teaching and Tutoring (TNT) program, the Art Docents of Los Gatos, science programs and teacher mini-grants.
The LGEEF board took care to make sure feedback from both the LGUSD and parents was included when funding decisions were made, according to Tina Orsi-Hartigan, LGEEF president.
"The LGEEF board has worked very hard to make sure funding plans are aligned with what the district needs and what the parents want to see," adds Mary Ann Park, LGUSD superintendent and an LGEEF board member.
Since 1982, when a group of local parents first gathered to discuss how they might improve the quality of education in the district's schools, the LGEEF has raised more than $1.25 million. Along with Park, this year's LGEEF board consists of 17 parents representing each of the five schools in the LGUSD.
