Charles Street land granted to Habitat
What a difference two years makes.
The town council approved the transfer of $587,000 from the Redevelopment Agency fund to the general fund to "buy" the small Charles Street lot slated to be a Habitat for Humanity affordable housing project. The RDA will then grant the land and $50,000 for preconstruction costs to Habitat.
When the town first decided to accept Habitat for Humanity's offer to build an affordable dwelling in 1998, the pie-shaped parcel was appraised at $260,000. Due to disagreements with Caltrans involving an easement, the project was delayed. In August the town reappraised the property at $537,000.
Habitat for Humanity, a national nonprofit organization, plans to build a two to three bedroom single family residence on the property.
Local individuals who meet the income and other eligibility criteria will be given priority.
