Lubeck wins funding race

By Clarence Cromwell

In the Town Council race, incumbent Linda Lubeck was winning the four-way fundraising duel as of Oct. 19.

Lubeck collected $5,568 in contributions from Oct. 1-19, a total of $9,175 for the election. Lubeck received $1,322 in contributions smaller than $100, the threshold for reporting contributor information.

Lubeck's largest contribution, $500, came from the Santa Clara County Firefighters organization. Tri-County Apartment Association gave her $200. Another $200 came from William and Barbara Flanagan; William is vice president of the Sunnyvale-based Amdahl computer company. Ken and Deborah Rodrigues gave $250; Ken represents the architectural firm Kenneth Rodriques & Partners, which designed the new strip mall at Blossom Hill Road and Los Gatos Boulevard. Bill Errico, a developer who owns Los Gatos Oaks apartments and an office building in town, gave $200.

Nine contributors gave Lubeck $100 apiece: Silicon Graphics manager Eric Carlson; Kaiser nurse Pamela Ross; Mitty High School teacher Joe Pirzynski, also a member of Los Gatos Police Department's Disaster Assistance Response Team and a watcher of town politics; Swanson Ford owner Robert Swanson; Dr. John K. Colwell; Planning Commissioner Sandy Decker; attorney Nora Frimann, Los Gatos Brewing Co. owner Andy Pavicich and Stephen and Linda Rice.

Jan Hutchins added $3,534 to his warchest. Of that, $471 came in contributions smaller than $100.

Ken Rodrigues, the architect, gave Hutchins $250. John Di Manto, owner of San Jose Construction Co., gave $198. William B. Baron, of Brandenberg Properties, gave $150.

Hutchins received a pair of $250 donations from South Bay Construction owners Richard Furtado and David J. Russell. His largest gift was a $750 Web page from Robin Chew, who runs Lucid Cafe, a Los Gatos-based Web page publisher.

The following contributors gave $100: Ted Wallace, owner of Ray Jones Bail Bonds; Councilmember Patrick O'Laughlin; O. Vincent Bruno of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; Planning Commissioner Sandy Decker and The Barrett Family Trust.

Frank Jones managed to pull away from last place and get ahead of former mayor Egon Jensen in the funding race. Jones collected $4,961 in just 19 days--nearly all of it in unreportable contributions, according to his disclosure statement.

The only cash gift reported was $100 from attorney Richard Boone. There was also the $183 Jones loaned his campaign.

Jones' contributions to date total $5,723, about $1,554 more than Jensen's total.

Egon Jensen reported a total of $2,020 in gifts during the funding period that ended Oct. 19. Of that, $1,350 was in amounts above the reporting threshold. The owners of Villa Felice, F. Bersano & Sons, contributed $500 to Jensen. A $250 contribution came from Mark Beck.

Jensen's $100 gifts came from the following people: former trails and bikeways commissioner Carol Ann Weber; Joanne Crum; Robert Caselli; Chester Lang, a retired IBM employee; Robert Swanson, owner of Swanson Ford and Joe Zanardi, part owner of the Green Valley Disposal Co.
