McCleary leads Vikes

Jackie McCleary raced over Newark's 3.0-mile Coyote Hills course in 19:20 to finish first overall and lead the West Valley Community College women's cross-country team to a 19-40 Coast Conference win over Hartnell.

Deborah Bleisch was second in 20:19 with Lisa Renteria (Westmont) third in 20:31 and Lydia Berlage fifth in 21:06.

Brian Dorgan finished third in 22:13 on the 4.1-mile men's course and Jason Hervey (Fremont) was fourth in 22:27 to spark the West Valley men to a 19-39 win over San Mateo. The Vikes lost 23-33 to Hartnell the same day.

In other West Valley sport action, Chris Spencer (Lynbrook) tossed in four goals and Luka Dvornik and Mark von Behren added two apiece to lead the men's water polo team to a 13-8 conference win over Merced. The Vikings are now 8-0 in the league play.

The Vikes slipped to 21-7 for the year, though, after suffering a 14-9 loss to the UC-Berkeley junior varsity. Spencer hit three goals for the Vikes and Lance Campbell (Los Gatos) added two.

Girls Softball

The Los Gatos-Saratoga Girls' Softball Association will hold signups for girls ages 7-14 on Nov. 13 and 20, 7-9 p.m. each night, at Fisher Middle School in Los Gatos, and on Nov. 21, 7-9 p.m., and Nov. 23, 10 a.m.-noon, at Argonaut School in Saratoga.

The cost is $100 per player, $80 for each additional family member. Players must provide a birth certificate. For information, call 291-2148.

Little League Signups

The Los Gatos Little League will hold signups for the 1997 season on Nov. 13 and 20, 7-9 p.m., in the cafeteria at Fisher Middle School.

Youngsters ages 5-12 (as of July 31, 1997) are eligible for the league. Proof of age is required and a September, October or November PG&E or water bill must be provided to prove residency.

The registration donation is $95 for the first child from a family and $75 for each additional child (maximum $200). The t-ball donation is $75 per child. For information, call 977-3088.
