Deaths bring about recall of blinds

As many as 800 million horizontal window blinds have been recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to prevent more children from dying of strangulation.

The CPSC announced the recall after concluding an investigation into the strangling death of a 16-month-old last year. Since 1991, 130 children from 9-to 17-months-old have been strangled. The vast majority of victims were strangled by pull cords, but 16 of the deaths came from the cords that hold the blind slats in place.

Window blind manufacturers stopped using pull cords that end in a loop in 1995, but children are still strangled by old blinds, as well as the internal cords of newer blinds.

To remedy the situation, manufacturers are offering free repair kits for both sets of cords. The kits include a plastic attachment to keep the internal cords from being pulled out of the blinds, and a safety tassel for pre-1995 pull cords.

Parents are asked to call the Window Covering Safety Council at 800.506.4636 for free repair kits.
