    Cougars open playoffs with win

    By Dick Sparrer

The Cougars of the Los Gatos Pop Warner Football organization weren't about to let a little rain dampen their spirits in the first round of the league playoffs.

The Cougars went out on a rain-soaked field at Harvey West Park in Santa Cruz and pulled out an exciting 15-6 victory over San Lorenzo Valley to open the junior midget playoffs in impressive fashion.

Richie Scudellari gave the Cougars the early lead with a 25-yard touchdown run in the first period. Stefan Fowler blasted over for the extra point, and the Cougars jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead.

San Lorenzo Valley scored a second-quarter touchdown, but only after the Cougars had scored again. Tony Christenberry scored on a 4-yard run and Scudellari kicked the 2-point conversion to make it 15-6 before the half.

Rain made it difficult for each offense in the second half, but SLV threatened in the fourth quarter. Nick Harris made a touchdown-saving tackle, though, to help preserve the win.

Fowler was the top tackler for the Cougars, who are now 7-2 for the year.

    Cougars win thriller

A week earlier, two fourth-quarter touchdowns and a couple of 2-point conversions sparked the Cougars to a thrilling 22-19 come-from-behind victory over Bay Cities.

Fowler and Scudellari each ran for TDs in the final period and Scudellari kicked a pair of 2-pointers to lift the Cougars from a 19-6 deficit to a 22-19 win.

Bay Cities went up 12-0 before Fowler scored on a 30-yard run just before the half to make it 12-6 at intermission.

The Cougars gave up another score in the third period to fall behind 19-6, but then the offense went to work.

Scudellari completed a clutch fourth-down pass to Thomas Watkins before blocks by Chandler Galt and Brennan Barker broke Fowler free on a 20-yard touchdown run. Scudellari converted, and Bay Cities held a slim 19-14 lead.

The Cougars got the ball back quickly when Jefrey West recovered an onside kick. Sean Harris and Jacob Whitaker picked up key yardage to set up Scudellari's 40-yard touchdown run. Scudellari added a little insurance with a 2-point kick, and the Cougars had wrapped up the thrilling victory.

Galt, Barker, Bret Havens, Eric Rowell, Eric Giebel, Sam Twombly, Billy James, Robbie LaBouff and Nick Politi all played well in the offensive line in the win.

Whitaker was the leading tackler for the Cougars, and Cameron Compton was the top receiver.

    Panthers win big

The Panthers ran their record to 6-2 with a 24-0 win over the Bay Cities Bulldogs. It was the fourth shutout of the season for the Panthers, who allowed the 'Dogs just 85 yards of total offense.

Jake Schonig scored on runs of 15 and 20 yards, and Kelly Peterson returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown. Matt Perrone kicked three 2-point conversions in the win.

Brett Kuntz came through with his third interception of the season, and Nick Smith was the leading tackler for the Panthers.

Schonig and Spencer Lopes led the ground attack for the Gatos offense. Nick Della Rocchetta was the top passer in the win and Nick Kalpin was his top receiver.

    Bearcats improve

The Bearcats, the local Pop Warner mighty mite squad, showed great improvement throughout the fall season.

The young 'Cats finished the year against the Morgan Hill Raiders, the Gilroy Browns and the Hollister Vikings, and played well in each game.

Devon Rodriguez and Matt Murray each came through with big gains and quarterback Luke Simons led the offensive attack for the Bearcats. Jerome Driggs and Eric Reichwein were other key players on offense.

Deonte Daniels, Andrew Trolan, Zach Allaun and Reichwein were top players in the defensive line for the Bearcats, and A.J. Luft, Rickie Hastie, Simons and Driggs were other defensive leaders.
