Day of the Dead
Los Gatos High School students celebrated the Latin American tradition of the Day of the Dead, or 'El Dia de los Muertos,' last week with their annual altar in the library. 'El Dia de los Muertos' is a joyful remembrance of loved ones who have died. This year, the Day of the Dead altar at Los Gatos High School was dedicated to Selena, the Mexican-American singer who was killed in Texas by a jealous fan in 1995. Her portrait was surrounded by the creative efforts of many students. Lani Dillon's sculpture class made bright papier-mâché flowers, piñatas and child-size plaster skeletons that lounged along the back wall of the library. Les Kishler's agro-ecology class harvested marigolds from the student gardens for the altar, and Wendy Cosgrove's cooking class made beautifully decorated sugar skulls. Spanish classes added colored-paper skeletons, skulls and tombstones.
