Vikings win NorCal polo title

By Dick Sparrer

Luka Dvornik tossed in six goals and Soro Salerno added four to lead the West Valley Community College men's water polo team to a 13-7 win over Diablo Valley College in the Northern California championship game.

Lance Campbell (Los Gatos), Cody Cannon and John Etheridge (Los Gatos) also scored goals in the West Valley win.

The Vikings trailed 2-0 after a period, but outscored Diablo Valley 4-1 in both the second and third periods and 5-3 in the fourth to claim the victory.

West Valley, 24-7 for the year, had opened the tournament with a 21-6 win over Ohlone. Scott Vera fired in four goals and Bryan Traverso and Etheridge added three apiece in the win. Chris Spencer and Dvornik had two each for the winners.

The Vikings now head to the Long Beach for the state championships Nov. 15-16.

In other sports action at West Valley, Matt Geske tossed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Vikings to a 43-32 Coast Conference victory over Monterey.

The win evened West Valley's conference record and leaves the Vikings 4-4 for the year.

Dionn Talley blasted over from the one for West Valley's first touchdown before Geske went to the air to hit Mike Nedney for 11 yards and a score and Jason Belligan for 71 yards and a TD. Nedney tossed to Justin Cambra for one two-point conversion and caught a pass from Geske for another.

Still, the Vikings were up just 23-17 at the half, but they scored three touchdowns in the second half to just two for Monterey.

Geske shot over from the one for a third-period score, and Tim Garner went in from the nine in the fourth. Nedney kicked the extra points after each TD.

Talley capped the scoring with a seven-yard run in the final quarter to close out the scoring in the win.

West Valley will host Hartnell on Nov. 15, 1:30 p.m., in a key game before closing the regular season at Gavilan on Nov. 23.

The women's volleyball team split a pair of Coast Conference decisions last week, beating Hartnell 15-4, 15-10, 13-15, 15-9 before losing to Cabrillo 8-15, 15-2, 15-11, 1-15, 15-10. The Vikings are even at 3-3 in conference play and 8-5 for the year.

The women's soccer team battled Cañada to a 1-1 tie after falling 5-0 to De Anza earlier in the week.
