Field hockey, volleyball teams in CCS semifinals
By Dick Sparrer
Los Gatos has already won a couple of Central Coast Section championships, but the Wildcats are hoping for more as they take to the field and court this week.
The Cats won CCS titles in girls and boys cross country last weekend, but they're still shooting for titles in football, field hockey and girls volleyball.
Hockey win
The Los Gatos girls opened the CCS field hockey tournament with a tight 1-0 win over rival Saratoga.
Nikki Anderson knocked in a first-half goal off an assist from Anita Reyes, and that was all Gatos needed to record the tight victory over the Falcons.
The Wildcats, now 12-3-2, will advance to the CCS semifinals on Nov. 14, 1 p.m., against St. Francis (9-1-6). The winner will move on to the CCS championship game against the Lynbrook (11-6-2)-Mitty (11-1-3) winner on Nov. 18, 11 a.m. All games are played at Los Gatos.
Anderson, Reyes, Rachel Lichte and Emily Scott are senior stars who will lead the Cats into the semifinals this week.
Girls Volleyball
The Wildcats will take an 19-9 record into CCS volleyball play this week. The Cats, who earned a first-round bye in the Division III tournament, opened play with a 15-10, 15-8, 15-6 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral on Saturday at Leland.
Gatos will now collide with Harbor (21-9) in the CCS semifinals on Nov. 16, 8 p.m., at Leland. The winner will face the Presentation (30-7)-St. Ignatius (30-7) winner in the CCS championship match on Nov. 18, 4:30 p.m., at West Valley Community College in Saratoga.
Smith is All-League
Jamie Smith of Los Gatos earned a place on the Peninsula League all-league golf team by placing in the top 10 overall at the league finals played recently.
Smith fired a 92 on the par-71 Poplar Creek Golf Course in San Mateo to finish ninth and win an all-league berth.
Hull wins opener
Alicia Hull won her first match at the De Anza Division tennis tournament, but lost a match later to face elimination.
Hull nailed a 6-1, 6-1 win over a Saratoga foe in the first round of the tournament, but then lost a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 heartbreaker to Liora Gelblum of Monta Vista in the semifinals.
Gelblum went on to finish second in the league and win a place in the CCS singles tournament.
Wildcats fall
Los Gatos lost a tough 6-4 decision to Menlo in the quarterfinals of the CCS Division II water polo tournament.
Mark Walleen pitched in two goals and Aaron Davis and Bobby Crowder added one apiece, but it wasn't enough for the Wildcats.
The clubs were scoreless after a period, but Menlo took a 3-1 lead by intermission. The two teams managed single goals in the third and each scored two in the fourth, but Gatos came up two goals short.
Gatos, 16-12 for the year, clinched a spot at CCS by finishing third in the league tournament. The Cats edged Monta Vista 15-14 to clinch third in the tourney.
The Wildcats opened the tournament with a lopsided 18-8 win over Cupertino. Crowder tossed in seven goals and Walleen pitched in five. Mike Dixon supported with four goals and Richie Crowder and Max Morse added one each.
Gatos dropped a tough 9-7 decision to Los Altos in the semifinals. R. Crowder led the Cats with three goals and Dixon added two. Walleen and Brett Bertocci hit one apiece.
Los Altos went on to lose to Palo Alto in the league championship game and Gatos went on to defeat Monta Vista for third place.
