Evelyn Nigl
Longtime Los Gatan Evelyn M. Nigl died Oct. 2, at Community Hospital of Los Gatos of heart failure. She was 87.
She was born Oct. 7, 1912, in Spencer, Wis. She began school at the age of four. One winter day, she was unable to walk home from school because the snow was very deep, so an older student named Max helped her. Eventually, he would become her husband.
After she graduated from high school, Nigl went to secretarial school but found that jobs were scarce during the Depression. In 1933, she married Max J. Nigl. The couple moved to San Francisco in 1941 and then to Burton Road in Los Gatos after World War II. Along with a home, the property also came with an apricot and prune orchard.
As her four children grew, Nigl worked in food service for various schools in the Cambrian School District. Her husband worked in home-building and remodeling in the Los Gatos and Cambrian Park areas from the 1950s through the 1970s. In 1979, Nigl retired from her school district work, but later served in the kitchen at the Sisters of the Holy Names convent in Los Gatos.
After Max's 1989 death, Nigl sold the family home and moved to a residence on Farley Road. The property is now part of the Highway 17/85 interchange. Nigl was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Los Gatos, volunteered her time embroidering dozens of dish towels for the Good Shepherd Auxiliary and loved gardening and sewing.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Virginia and Walter Dahl of San Jose and Patricia and Butch Still of Hood River, Ore.; sons and daughters-in-law Charles and Connie Nigl of Madera and John and Suze Nigl of Hood River, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sister Irene Luepke of Spencer, Wis., and brother Elmer Peterson of Sugar Grove, Ill.
Memorial services have been held. Donations may be made to the San Jose Family Shelter, 1590 Las Plumas Ave., San Jose, 95133, or to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 15885 Los Gatos-Almaden Road, Los Gatos, 95032.
