    Wildcats beat Paly 21-12

    By Dick Sparrer

Two things had to happen last Friday night for the Los Gatos frosh-soph football team to win a share of the championship in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League--one the Wildcats could control, the other they couldn't.

The Cats had to beat Palo Alto on the final night of the league season, and they had to hope for Saratoga to knock off Wilcox.

Los Gatos took care of business at Helm Field on Friday, beating Paly 21-12 to finish at 5-1 in the division and at 9-1 for the year.

But the Wildcats didn't get any help from their Saratoga friends. The Falcons lost 33-12 to the Chargers, leaving Los Gatos in second place behind Wilcox.

The Chargers finished at 6-0 to claim the league title. Gatos was second at 5-1, with Saratoga third at 4-2.

But Los Gatos coach Scott Downs wasn't complaining. "This was a great group of kids and a great group of coaches," said Downs after the win over Paly. "It was really a fun year, and very memorable."

Chris Willard ran for two touchdowns, and Brian Miguel scored another to lift the Cats to the win over the Vikings. Willard, who led the Cats with 92 yards on 19 carries, ran over from the 1 in the second period, and Derek Tam kicked the first of three extra points, but Gatos led just 7-6 at intermission.

Miguel, who added 26 yards on just three tries, scored from the 7 in the third quarter, and Willard scored from the 3 in the fourth.

The two backs, along with Patrick Michaelson and quarterback Steve Sweeny, worked behind a solid offensive wall led by Nick Crafford, John Allen, Matt Rose, Tyler Wilson and Evan McDonald.

Sweeny finished the night hitting on five of nine passes for 52 yards, going to Matt Cooke twice and to Willard, Peter Kiszka and Stuart Gordon with one each.

Brandon Brigham was the top tackler with 10 stops, and Travis Howell was in on nine. Chris McMorrow finished with eight tackles, and James Furlo had six.
