John Sweat
Local resident John Dawson Sweat died on Oct. 7 at the age of 82.
Born on Nov. 24, 1916, in Carrier Mills, Ill., Dawson served in the U.S. Army during World War II and participated in various American, European, African and Middle Eastern campaigns. After the war, he served as an Illinois state trooper.
Locally, Sweat worked for 31 years for Lockheed Missiles and Space as a supervisor of carpentry and construction.
Survivors include wife Willamine Sweat of San Jose; sons John Sweat Jr. and Dan Tanner, both of San Jose; daughters Ruth Ann Dunn of Modesto and Darla Tanner of Idaho; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services have been held. Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
John Robert Shay Jr.
John Robert "Jack" Shay Jr. died Nov. 4 in his Los Gatos home.
Prior to his 1986 retirement, Shay was a longtime employee of the St. Regis Paper Co. He also worked as an independent contractor for Stone Container until the time of his death.
Shay, a Los Gatos resident for 33 years, was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Elks Lodge for more than 50 years.
He was predeceased by wife Wanda Williams Shay. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Patti and Tom Peters of Pleasanton and Liz and Brian Floyd of Los Gatos; and grandchildren Scott, Chris and Kyle Peters and Traci and Ryan Johnson.

Pearl Van Ornum
Pearl Van Ornum, a Los Gatos resident for the past 21 years, died Nov. 8 at the age of 91.
Van Ornum was born Nov. 1, 1908, in Kenosha, Wis. She worked as a legal secretary for many years and participated in many women's clubs, both locally and in her home state. She also belonged to the Hers Club at the Los Gatos Commons.
According to daughter Linda Kakes, Van Ornum's main passion was sports. "She was truly the world's most avid sports fan. She was a diehard fan of the Green Bay Packers, and she had a phenomenal command of all things related to sports!" Kakes says.
Van Ornum was preceded in death by husband Walter. Survivors include Kakes of San Jose and another daughter, Paula O'Neil of Milwaukee; son Jim Van Ornum of Minneapolis; and grandchildren Jeff and Billy Kakes of San Jose and Stacie and Corey Van Ornum of Minneapolis.
A private burial will take place in Oshkosh, Wis. Donations may be made to City Team Ministries Rescue Mission, 580 Charles St., San Jose, 95112.
