Old Town opening pays off for Community Foundation
By Nathan R. Huff
The Old Town grand-opening celebration on Nov. 13 was more than an excuse for local children to have their faces painted, ride a miniature train and marvel at balloon animals.
Behind the congratulatory speeches and symbolic ribbon cutting, the Los Gatos Community Foundation received recognition, through Old Town's donation of a portion of every Oakville Grocery Card gift certificate redeemed Nov. 13.
"It was a very successful day for us," said Paul Dubois, Community Foundation president. "Our purpose was to let the community know who we are and what we're about." Dubois said the foundation also sold community resource directories from its booth.
The Foundation is acting as an umbrella organization for the $1.5 million needed for a new pool at Los Gatos High School, as well as pursuing its own projects. These projects include the construction of a bandstand in Oak Meadow Park, which the organization would like to crown with the historic cupola now residing in the park.
"The board will decide whether the money will go to the cupola, or grants or scholarships," Dubois said.
Although Dubois said he hadn't received any final figures on money raised by the post cards, Old Town officials said that more than 1,000 of the cards had been returned to Oakville Grocery.
