Courtside teams competein USTA adult nationals

Two area adult tennis teams carried the Northern California banner to the United States Tennis Association League National tournament last month at Randolph Park in Tucson, Ariz.

Teams from Cupertino and from Courtside in Los Gatos advanced to the 3.5 adult nationals as the NorCal representatives. Cupertino won one of three matches at the nationals, and Courtside won two of three.

Faye Pairman won three straight matches in singles play to lead the Courtside effort at the nationals.

Pairman won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to start Courtside on the road to a tight 3-2 win over Portland, Ore. Liza Maminski and Elaine Sullivan teamed for a 1-6, 6-4 (1-0 tiebreaker) win at No. 1 doubles and Terri Morrison and Gail Andrews won 5-7, 6-2 (1-0) at No. 2.

Pairman (6-3, 6-1) and Elaine McGinnis (6-1, 6-1) were singles winners, and the doubles teams of Maminski-Sunnyvale (6-3, 7-5), Morrison-Andrews (6-2, 6-0) and Sharon Benz-Allie Douthit (6-4, 6-0) each won in Courtside's 5-0 victory over Los Angeles.

Pairman's 5-7, 6-3 (1-0) win at No. 1 singles was the lone Courtside triumph in a 4-1 loss to Missoula, Mont.

Cupertino nailed a tight 3-2 win over San Juan, Puerto Rico, behind wins by the three doubles teams of Jon Higashinchi-Emil Pisarri (6-7, 6-2, 1-0), Darryl Lee-Michael Lin (6-4, 6-3) and Robert Larocca-Mark Bailey (2-6, 6-4, 1-0).

But Cupertino lost 5-0 to Honolulu and 3-2 to Albuquerque, NM. Derek Sato won 7-5, 4-6 (1-0) at No. 1 singles, and Lin won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 in the loss to New Mexico.

Silicon VOlley, a men's 3.0 team that plays out of the Las Palmas Municipal Courts in Sunnyvale, also made a trip to the nationals after winning a Northern California title.

The local squad posted a 12-0 record in league play, then won three matches at the District III tournament. Silicon VOlley beat Walnut Creek, Danville and Napa at the NorCal sectionals to earn a berth in the nationals.

Co-most valuable players Norman Chow and Joseph Huang were each undefeated in singles play to lead the club to the NorCal crown.
