St. Andrew's award goes to Los Gatan

John Petersen, a Los Gatos seventh-grader at St. Andrew's School in Saratoga, is the first recipient of the school's Geoffrey Andrew Ladd Discovery Award. The award was set up by family and friends in memory of 11-year-old Geoffrey, a St. Andrew's student who died suddenly last year. Each year, a sixth- or seventh-grader exemplifying Geoffrey's citizenship, curiosity and passion for learning will receive the award, which consists of an educational adventure/learning trip to Australia. John, a friend of Geoffrey's since kindergarten, traveled to Australia this summer with his family, collected artifacts (including a didjeridoo), kept a detailed journal and took photographs. With help from his family, he compiled a CD-ROM chronicling the journey, which he presented to students and gave to the school library.
